John Brecht is never going to marry. It's not that he's opposed to the idea. Not entirely, anyway. It's just that the number of unattached women who don't work in the upstairs rooms of the saloons in Tucson is somewhere in the single digits. Maybe not even that high.

Cynthia Powell, a Massachusetts schoolteacher, caught in a compromising situation with the man she thought was going to marry her, has lost not only her prospect of a husband, but also her job. Hoping to leave her ruined reputation behind, she places an advertisement in the Matrimonial News.
When John's younger brother Henry sees her ad, he's eager to respond to it. There's just one problem. He's never been able to write elegant prose, certainly nothing that will entice a cultured lady from back east to marry him.
But his brother is an avid reader and an eloquent writer. Against his better judgment, John agrees to write the letters for Henry. With each response, he's more attracted to the woman who's supposed to become Henry's wife.
He thinks he's found a way to avoid her. But is that what Cynthia wants?
